OpenStudy (08surya):

can any one tell me the shortest and reliable method to find rank of matrix?

OpenStudy (atlas):

Reduce the matrix using column or row operations. The number of non-zero rows in the matrix is its rank.......

OpenStudy (08surya):

i know this method .i want to know short cut

OpenStudy (atlas):

This is the method I know...........rank simply means that there should be no dependency of one row/column over others

OpenStudy (08surya):

ya but u know for comptiton purpose this method is not so handy

OpenStudy (atlas):

If there is a dependency the row/column becomes zero on reducing it............I hope others will help you find a short-cut

OpenStudy (08surya):

hope so

OpenStudy (atlas):

There is another method using algebra........but I think that is still more lengthy However there are some cool tricks for reducing a matrix maybe that will help u

OpenStudy (08surya):

i want to know the tricks to reduce the matrix

OpenStudy (atlas):

keep the first row unchanged........subtract the second and third row with the multiple of first row such that the 2nd and 3rd elements of first column become zero.....thats it

OpenStudy (atlas):

do the same thing with the next row and so on

OpenStudy (08surya):

i think this method is derived from traditional method

OpenStudy (atlas):

yup

OpenStudy (08surya):

thnx for ur help buddy

OpenStudy (atlas):

you are welcome
