thermal energy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

As its coming back to earth from orbit, the space shuttle enters the atmoshpere at a speed of roughly 8000 m/s. Just bfore it lands, its speed has already decreased at about 100 m/s. the gravitational potential energy of the Earth- shuttle system has also decreased. (atmoshpere begins at 120 km above earth surface) 1. estimate the amount of kinetic and gravitational potential energy that the shuttle has lost. 2. where did the energy go (this is my question) 3. where did the shuttle's momntum go?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The energy was lost in friction from air resistance. It became heat, light, and sound

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know the first one...how abt #3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The air got the momentum

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how can air get the momentum??? confused can you explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The air molecules started bouncing around with eachother

OpenStudy (anonymous):

They bounced off the ship when it hit them and then bounced off each other

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but didnt they get back when space shuttle moved
