decide whether the lines with the equations y=2x-1 and y=-2x+1 are perpendicular?

hartnn (hartnn):

can you find the slope of those lines ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

isn't it 2x?

hartnn (hartnn):

for y=mx+c the slope is just "m" not mx

hartnn (hartnn):

so for y=2x-1, the slope =... ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2

hartnn (hartnn):

correct! and whats the slope of y=-2x+1 ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2

hartnn (hartnn):

good :) now for lines to be perpendicular , the product of their slopes must be -1 !! so, here, is the product = -1 ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

hartnn (hartnn):

correct, because 2*-2 =-4 and not -1 so, the lines are NOT perpendicular, got it ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yep, thanks

hartnn (hartnn):

welcome ^_^
