Question

What is the cause of the relationship between the atomic number and the ionic radius?? :P
I know that as the atomic number increases, the ionic radius increases and that the relationship is consistent. Can somebody explain this to me?

as the atomic number increases in the row of periodic table the ionic radius decreases
and as the atomic no increases in a group from top to bottom the ionic radius increases :)
