this is the Peloponnesian War right?
yeah
In 431 B.C, the Delian League which was lead by the Athenians, fought against the Peloponnesian League which was led by Sparta. The reason why this war was not good for the Athenians to start is mainly because they lost so therefore it was not the right choice to fight them. Athenians and Sparta were allied but broke truce and fought a war which was called “The First Peloponnesian War”. Afterwards they made a treaty for truce that would last five years. After the treaty ended they remained neutral with each other and ended up going into war again which was called “The Peloponnesian War”. During the war, the Athenians lost many soldiers and there territory that they owned. The Spartans, who were winning the war, did what is called “Hegemony” on both Athenians and the Athenians allies. This is where the Spartans conquer the territories, and rule upon them from victory. The Peloponnesian War went onto the Second Peloponnesian war, loosing even more troops during the war. The Athenians somewhat recovered but ended up breaking the recovery after the Spartans took Athenians troops slaves and destroyed there naval yards as well as conquering there cities. The Athenians survived because of there opponents lacking the initiative. And they were extremely slow to bring there fleets to attack. Lonian states rebelled and joined the Athenians into battle and allied with them. During the beginning of the war the Athenians kept some money, and ships stored for a last resort which they began to use near the end. The final reason on why the Athenians made a bad decision on starting a war is because at the end of the war, a Spartan general named Lysander won a naval battle, which was called the “Battle of Notium” and was fought in 406 B.C. The Athenians general Alcibiades never was re-elected again, he then left the city of Athens and never returned. The Athenians however, won the naval battle called the “Battle of Arginusae” defeating Sparta, but even though they won, the weather made it to were Athenian troops were not able to rescue stranded crews in the oceans. This caused a huge trial that lead to six Athenians top naval commanders to be executed. Spartans retaliated after the defeat to another naval battle but without conflict, the Spartan naval general used starvation to defeat the Athenians, surrounded them so they could not go anywhere and waited until the fleet starved to death. 168 Ships were sunk, and four thousand Athenian Sailors were captured. The Spartans and there allies ended up surrounded Athenian cities causing a siege and waited until they surrendered. The Athenians ended up surrendering in 404 B.C due to starvation, and diseases in there towns. The Athenians allies followed the Athenians and surrendered after. Overall, the three reasons why it was a horrible idea was one, they lost great commanders and soldiers, two, they faced diseases starvation and population loss, and three, they lost territory and lost during a humiliating defeat.
