OpenStudy (littlenugget):

Mark received a 3.5% salary increase. His salary after the raise was $36,432. What was his salary before the raise?

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

There's many way on how to find the answer to this problem. One way is to write this type of equation: Let x = Mark's original salary. (3.5% * x) + x = 36,432 Now its not proper to write percent in an equation, so you can convert percent into decimal. To convert 3.5% into decimal, then move the decimal 2 places to the left. So 3.5% in decimal would be 0.035. So the equation would be: (0.035x) + x = 36,432. Now solve for x. :) I hope this help. Also, if you want me to explain on how I got "(0.036x)", then just ask me. :)

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

"(0.035x)" My bad.

OpenStudy (littlenugget):

Thanks! @GoldPhenoix This is exactly what i needed! =)

OpenStudy (goldphenoix):

Do you understand the "(0.035x)" part? Also, no problem. :) That's why I am here.

OpenStudy (littlenugget):

Yep :) @GoldPhenoix
