0.557 what happens after 3 digit chopping arithmatic?

OpenStudy (john_es):

After each elementary operation is performed, the result is approximated by the nearest number with 3 significant digits.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

will it be 0.5 or 0.557 in this case then?

OpenStudy (john_es):

No, my answer means, that if you have 0.557 and 0.1234, and you multiply both you obtaind, 0.0687338 but you have to chop to 0.069, because you only have 3 significant digits in 3 digit arithmetic.

OpenStudy (john_es):

The zero at the left is not a signficant digit.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alright. thanks... i think i get it now
