Why does a solid maintain its shape regardless of its container?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I would say it's because the intermolecular forces are strong enough to keep the atoms closer than that of a liquid of the same compound.

The atoms or molecules in a solid are densely packed together, they can't move far. Unlike in liquids and gases where they are further apart and have more room to move around.
