A triangle with the vertices A(–3, 4), B(3, 1), and C(–1, –5) is dilated by a scale factor of 2. Find the coordinates of A', B', and C'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

also, same data, but translated 5 units left and 3 units up.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Dilation is another way of saying "multiply by." Translation along left/right and up/down is another way of saying add and subtract to x and y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i just multiply like, -3 and 4, by two? and thats those points? @e.mccormick

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

The dialate one you multiply by 2. The translate one you have 5 units left, so -5 on the x values, and 3 units up so +3 to the y values. Dilation http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/geometry/GT3/Ldilate2.htm Translation: http://www.regentsprep.org/Regents/math/geometry/GT2/Trans.htm
