President Hoover’s overall plan to deal with the Great Depression was to ___________.

Hoover was a guy who didnt really beleive that the GD could be ended by his means. he sort of let it go. however, he did try a few things. 1) voluntarism. leaders of business, labor and agriculture were sent to the White House and were urged to adopt a program of voluntary cooperation for recovery. think about it. If you went to school for 8 years to become a doctor, would you want to do volunteer work? no. it failed. 2) government spending: gov pumps money into economy to make it better. Hoover proposed 423 million. it wasnt nearly enough to do anything. 3) agricultural marketing act: tried to help farmers maintin prices. the federally sponsored farm board would make loans to national marketing cooperatives or establish corporations to buy surpluses and raise prices. it didnt work either. the bottom line is, he didnt have a real plan. thats why his popularity declined. people started calling their run down shanty towns (towns built out of scrap material on the outskirts of cities) "hoovervilles" and started calling newspapers "hoover blankets" cause thats how they would keep themselves warm.
