What is a better wording of the sentence,"My friend wants to move away from home to be independent."?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That sounds fine to me, but you could also use "In order to be more independent, my friend wants to move away from home."

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Does this sentence sound right to you, " You see, most teenagers of my age, don’t realize what their parents do for them, until they move away from home."? I was looking for a word to replace move away

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Leave may have more of an impact. It's a shorter word, and it usually has a stronger sense of finality.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

" You see, most teenagers of my age, don’t realize what their parents do for them, until they leave home."?

OpenStudy (roku):

"you see" sounds informal

OpenStudy (roku):

why dont you try instead... Most tenagers my age are unaware of the the benefits of living with their parents; and so they leave home too early.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my essay could be formal or informal. I like the first part of the sentence, but dont you think inserting the word too early would change the meaning of it?

OpenStudy (roku):

well what you had before sounded incomplete. what exactly is the point you want to make?

OpenStudy (roku):

ohh... i think i get it now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The point is that people dont realize what their parents do for them , but once they move away from home they realize the things their parents do for them. if that makes sense. :/

OpenStudy (roku):

i get it... lets see....

OpenStudy (roku):

so its like youre saying that they were unappreciative then

OpenStudy (roku):

Teenagers my age usually dont appreciate living with their parents until they have moved away.

OpenStudy (roku):

how does that sound?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i liked your first sentence better :/

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Left home, lived on their own, faced the world on their own terms, made it on their own for a while, cut the cord, been responsible from everything from rent to laundry detergent, become completely independent.... to name a few.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

oops... for everything from...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you sir!

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Taken the plunge into the sea of life and swum under their own power, fending off the sharks of the world, been tangled in the seaweed of life, and had to be responsible for it all.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

That is, if you feel like a wet metaphor. Turning something into a story like that can make it more memorable. However, it can also make it more distracting. Need to be careful in the visuals.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That would change the whole theme of the essay. :/ I worked hard on my into

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Yes, but you could do small tweaks following the idea of a metaphor. Not that particular one, but little bits of it to add visuals. Take the old phrase, "Stand on your own two feet." Well, you could tweak it and say, "Until they not only stand on their own two feet but also have to deal with any nails they step on." This takes bot a bit of the old and gives something new. It has a visual that helps people remember the idea of responsibility.

OpenStudy (roku):

Most tenagers my age are unaware of the benefits of living with their parents until they move out and have numerous responsibilities; and this is the time they truly appreciate what they had.

OpenStudy (roku):

truly appreciate the help they had.

OpenStudy (roku):

youre writing the essay right now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But that sentence is in the middle of my paragraph. :/ And as of now, I am not standing on my two feet. Yeah Roku, my college essay that is.

OpenStudy (roku):

okay, so what is the problem?

OpenStudy (roku):

is due tomorow?

OpenStudy (roku):

maybe you copuld show that teens dont appreciate until they leave the home
