Who was Anne Hutchinson?
A puritan (religion from the 16th and 17th centuries) spiritual adviser. She was a mother of 15 and a participant in the Antinomian Controversy, or the Free Grace Controversy. This took place in the young Massachusetts Bay. It was a both religious and political debate; a theological debate. It addressed the "covenant of grace" and "covenant of works," and gender discrimination along with various intertwined political aims. I can link you a few quotes if you need them. This was 1636-1638. Historian Emery Battis wrote, "Gifted with a magnetism which is imparted to few, she had, until the hour of her fall, warm adherents far outnumbering her enemies, and it was only by dint of skillful maneuvering that the authorities were able to loosen her hold on the community."
