what was the main reason the south began to secede from the union

OpenStudy (anonymous):

economic and social differences between the south and north. the north's economy relied on industry. the south's mostly on agriculture. so when the north put it out there that hey, maybe we should abolish slavery, the south thought they were trying to break their economy. because slaves were the ones that did most of the work.
