no thats fine! I wanna try and help him understand it. Take the first option. you have an equation. X+14=36
that is saying that whatever X is(we know its 27!) will be able to combine with 14 and equal 36. first thing he should do is just plug in what you know which is X! that makes the equation look like this. 27+14=36
can he solve it from there? if that is confusing, have him leave the spot where the "36" is blank. that might make it look easier! then he can just solve it. Does this make sense? haha

i could tell you the answer but i dont have time to explain in detail! basically you need to isolate X so just divide both sides by 12(right now 12 is being multiplied by x. you need to do the opposite of multiplication) and so you should divide 30 by 12 and get your answer(what x equals) i have to go now! good luck :)
