What operation should be performed first in the expression [23 × (4 + 3)] ÷ 9 - 1?

OpenStudy (usarmy3947):

Addition Subtraction Multiplication Exponents

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Addition

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you do pemdas.(parentisis,exponents,multiplication,division,addition,subtraction)in that order

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so distibute 23 by multiplying it by 4 and 3 then add both solutions together then divide by 9 and you get 17.8 then round it and you get 18

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then subtract 1 and you get 17

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@marinesrock like you said Parenthesis first so in this question addition is in parenthesis , so you would add first.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

[23 × (4 + 3)] ÷ 9 - 1 add 4+3 multiply it by 23 then divide it by 9 and then minus 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

don't forget the 23 is also in it by the brakets so you need to distribute b4 anything

OpenStudy (anonymous):

either way you do it.mine or hers you get the same answer
