How do enzymes affect chemical reactions and why does this make enzymes important to living things?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Enzymes lower the energy needed to initiate a chemical reaction.

OpenStudy (roku):

yeah they reduce the activation energy

the above responses are completely correct! The result of which will speed up processes in the cell that would have otherwise taken a very long time to occur. The presence of enzymes, or biological catalysts, also give a higher chance of reaction happening due to common location. For example if substance A binds to enzyme X, which also captures substance B (which converts it to substance C)--> the fact this is happening in the same location greatly increases the likeliness of the reaction happening!

Oh, okay. That makes a lot more sense than i thought it would. Thank you very much!!
