In the sequence of numbers 1,2,2,3,3,3,.. [assume the pattern of one 1, two 2s, three 3s, four 4s, and so on continues], the number in the 40th position will be: I understand the pattern, but I don't know how to write an equation to solve this.

@Directrix

Directrix (directrix):

My suggestion is to write out the sequence to the 40th slot.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But that would take a while. Is there any faster way?

Directrix (directrix):

Take a look at this version of the problem as worked by one of our own OpenStudy members. http://tinyurl.com/nnbmm9a

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So the answer would be 8, correct?

Directrix (directrix):

I thought I got 9. I'll have to check. Hey, @jim_thompson5910 is online here at OpenStudy, ask him about how to do this problem in a systematic manner. @SHSAT-Help You return to the sequence at the link and count. I'll do the same and then we can compare.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Alright.

Directrix (directrix):

Post what you get when you count.

Directrix (directrix):

Are you counting here. See attachment. @SHSAT-Help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ooh. You were right. My bad.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I always try to do these problem fast. Fast as in 1-20 second. >_> I guess Ik I have to take some time to do some of these questions.
