Part 1 Consider the following problem: A tsunami is a giant wave (much bigger than usual) of ocean water that crashes over the land, sometimes killing thousands of people. Tsunamis are triggered by offshore earthquakes out in the middle of the ocean. The giant waves move quickly toward the shore just after the earthquake. There needs to be some way of warning and protecting people from the dangers of tsunamis.

Can you brainstorm some ways to protect people from tsunamis? For example, is there some kind of barrier that could be built to protect homes against the waves? How could such a barrier be constructed such that it doesn’t interfere with people’s access to the ocean or with ocean views? What other ideas can you come up with? Write down 2 or 3 ideas—don’t worry about coming up with ideas that are very complex—just write down some general solutions that you think might be considered.


Part 2 Review your ideas for tsunami safety and pick the idea you think is the most promising solution. Write down a plan of how you could test the idea you think is most promising. You will not actually test your design.
