Tension Question Help Needed !

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to know if these statements in attached file would be true or false

OpenStudy (matt101):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@matt101 I believe the first one and second are, I'm not to sure about the second and the last one I'm puzzled as to the difference the tension force and force done by the weight.

OpenStudy (trantom):

I think a. is false

OpenStudy (matt101):

Yup! a. is false If the net forces were different on the two masses, then one mass would accelerate faster than the other, and that intuitively just doesn't make sense in this situation.

OpenStudy (matt101):

b. tells you to draw a free body diagram. What forces are acting on each mass?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

on object 1 has force of friction in the positve X so going to the right. and force N and Mg. also tension in the opposite direction of the friction force. On object 2 a force mg and N . Tension in the negative X and force exerted in the opposite direction

OpenStudy (matt101):

Correct! How about c?

OpenStudy (matt101):

I'm going to bed soon, but for the last two questions keep this in mind: c - similar idea as for a, just look at my response and think about it for a sec d - what is the net force acting on mass 1 in each case? How would this affect the acceleration?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C would be false and D would be true
