Why did people in most European nations believe that the war that started in August 1914 would end quickly?

the last seemingly identical war, between the same principal opponents (France and Germany), took only five months, not counting a siege of Paris that extended the actual peace settlement another 5 months. It appeared that with modern, increasingly lethal weaponry, plus railroads for efficient movement, victory in Europe would be quick and complete, though it was less clear who would be that victor.
