how wide is the professional football fieldThe rectangular playing area of a professional football field is 100 yards long. The perimeter of the playing area is 920 feet. The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2l + 2w. What is the width of the playing field? Please help this is a Math Virtually Everywhere Project!! Thank You! :)

OpenStudy (jack1):

\[P = 2L + 2W\] \[P = 2(100) + 2W\] \[P = 200 + 2W\] ... whats a yard...? like how many feets is it ...? and when will you convert to metric system instead of quartz, fathoms, farenheit and ounces ;D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There are 3ft in a yard and I am not converting anything

OpenStudy (jack1):

i was just teasin, sorry ;P so 3 ft in a yrd so P = 920 ft = 920/3 yrds = 306.66 yrds 306.66 = 200 + 2W so W = ...?? @fluteprincess ?

It's ok FYI I am not mad at you but, I am having trouble understanding this math I hate it lol!! I sock at math all the time! :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know what to do first with this problem so could you explain it step by step?

OpenStudy (jack1):

s'ok, and math is just logic + rules

OpenStudy (jack1):

of course, happily so:

OpenStudy (jack1):

The rectangular playing area of a professional football field is 100 yards long so we know its a rectangle, so 1st step: draw a rectangle (visual usually makes things heaps easier hey) |dw:1380898511490:dw|

OpenStudy (jack1):

rectangle made up of Length ( L ) and Width ( W ) and we were just told that our rectangle is 100 yrds Long so length = 100 yards = 300 feet ... yeah?|dw:1380898664220:dw|

OpenStudy (jack1):

next part: The perimeter of the playing area is 920 feet. The formula for the perimeter of a rectangle is P = 2l + 2w. first: convert everything into the one unit of measurement so everything has to bee in feet OR everything has to be in yards so 920 ft / 3 = 306.66 yards so perimeter = 306.66 yards

OpenStudy (jack1):

|dw:1380898855897:dw| with me so far?
