Is anyone good at Algebraic Word problems?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeaaaaah!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what do u need help on?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Shoot out the question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, I have about 5 questions, but heres the 1st one. Maya and Sally were the two finalists in a singing competition. The person with the most votes from the audience was chosen as the winner. Sally received 25% of the total votes and lost by 62,500 votes. No person in the audience was allowed to vote more than once. The equation below represents this situation, where y is the total number of votes cast and x is the number of votes Maya received. x - 62,500 = 0.25y If a total of 125,000 people voted, how many votes did Maya receive?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm thinking it's 250,000, but I'm not sure. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x - 62,500 = 0.25y; If a total of 125,000 people voted, how many votes did Maya receive? x = Maya, y = total, = 125,000 x - 62500 = 0.25(125,000) = 31,250 x - 62500 = 31,250 x = 62500 + 31250 = 93,750 votes for Maya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = Maya, y = total, = 125,000 x - 62500 = 0.25(125,000) = 31,250 x - 62500 = 31,250 x = 62500 + 31250 = 93,750 votes for Maya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x = Maya, y = total, = 125,000 x - 62500 = 0.25(125,000) = 31,250 x - 62500 = 31,250 x = 62500 + 31250 = 93,750 votes for Maya

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, thanks for help on that one! Coach Johnson is 10 years older than Tim. When Tim started football 3 years ago, Coach Johnson was twice his age. How old is Tim now?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL everyone copied it from yahoo

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually i saw the pattern forming and didnt want to break the chain, so i copied it from @kathy0514

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C = coach; T = Tim C = T + 10; C-3 = 2(T-3), so C = 2T - 6 + 3 = 2t - 3 2t - 3 = t + 10 t = 13, Tim's age now, so coach is 23; three years ago they were 10 & 20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I think it might be 23 but I'm prob wrong

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lmao @Jack3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I probably know your next question and i have the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@UditKulka I don't get what you mean. Would the answer be 13?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes sry 13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you. The sum of three consecutive integers is 267. What is the largest integer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a + b + c = 267 Since they are consecutive, b = a + 1, c = a + 2. Substitute a + a+1 + a+2 = 267 3a + 3 = 267 3a = 264 a = 88, b = 89, c = 90

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 90

A store offers a 15% discount on all items in the store during a sale. All store employees get an additional 10% employee discount. In the equation below, C represents the cost of an item for an employee including tax, and x represents the original price of the item. C = 0.765x + 0.06(0.765x) Chris is an employee at the store. He plans to buy a coat during the sale. The price of the coat before the discount is $100. How much will Chris pay for the coat during the sale? Ur next question??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Let the integers be x + (x+1) + (x + 2) x + (x+1) + (x + 2) = 267 3x + 3 = 267 3x = 264 x = 88 88+89+90=267 Largest integer=90 Another method 267/3 = 89 It's the average,so it has to be the middle one. Thus 89, then I took 89 - 1 = 88 and 89 + 1 = 90 and just put them in order. 88+89+90=267 Largest integer=90

The table below shows the fees to check bags on a certain airline. A 2-column table with 'Type of Bag' and 'Fee per Bag' as the column headings. The first checked bag costs $20, the second checked bag costs $25, and extra bags cost $50 each If x represents the total number of bags a person checks and each person checks more than two bags, the equation below can be used to determine C, the total fee for all the bags. 20 + 25 + 50(x - 2) = C Arianna paid a total of $145 to check all her bags on a flight. How many bags did she check in all?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have: 20 + 25 + 50(x - 2) = C, and C = 145 So: 20 + 25 + 50(x - 2) = 145 45 + 50x - 100 = 145 50x = 200 x = 4 She checked in 4 bags :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have: 20 + 25 + 50(x - 2) = C, and C = 145 So: 20 + 25 + 50(x - 2) = 145 45 + 50x - 100 = 145 50x = 200 x = 4 She checked in 4 bags :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@kathy0514 u copied it from yahooo right lollllllllll

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@UditKulka , @kathy0514 Thank you for both of your answers!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@UditKulka I doubt she did, she's a freaking math genius

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Hey It was indeed tiring typing out the answers but i love helping people

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what did u get on the quiz?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A store offers a 15% discount on all items in the store during a sale. All store employees get an additional 10% employee discount. In the equation below, C represents the cost of an item for an employee including tax, and x represents the original price of the item. C = 0.765x + 0.06(0.765x) Chris is an employee at the store. He plans to buy a coat during the sale. The price of the coat before the discount is $100. How much will Chris pay for the coat during the sale? I think its $81.09

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@kathy0514 What quiz?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that wasn't a quiz?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C=.765*100+.0435*100 C=76.50+4.35 C=$80.85 IS THE DISCOUNTED PRICE.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C=.765×100+.06(.765×100) C=76.5+.06×76.5 then a calculator would work, or you can be fancy and rewrite this as C=(1.06)×76.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol part of it was, but I haven't turned it in for my teacher yet. @kathy0514 so are you getting an answer of 81.09 too?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Lol okay thanks :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

any other questions?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Probably we know the questions

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nope... I got a 60% on it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

all of those?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

just those 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@UditKulka I guess yahooanswers isn't that good after all

OpenStudy (anonymous):

LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug the information they give you into the equation so for the first one plug in 125,000 for y and solve for x for the second one plug in 100 for x and solve for C Hope I helped!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

C = 0.765(100) + 0.06[0.765(100)] C = 76.5 + 0.06(76.5) C = 76.5 + 4.59 C = 81.09
