For (4), I'd say it was because Commodore Matthew Perry attacked Japanese ports in the 1850s...all just so they would trade with the West and open their society up to business.

It was like a wake up call reminding them of how backwards their own infrastructure and technology were compared to the West -- there really wasn't anything they could do to fight these newfangled ships and their cannons.

So Japan embarked on a huge program of industrialization and militarism, adopting Western technology and military tactics in order to bring their nation up to speed.
