John and 3 friends are going out for pizza for lunch. They split one pizza and 4 large drinks. The pizza cost $13.00. After using a $6.00 gift certificate, they spend a total of $13.20. Write an equation to model this situation, and find the cost of one large drink.
Did u write an equation yet?
no, i dont understand how
You know what the meal costs right?
the total is 13.20 right?
Yes.
If you want to do an equation 13.20=? right?
I believe so. i think
You are right.
They only bought one pizza. How much did that pizza cost?
13 dollars?
Correct.
So 13.20=13.00? We put on the question mark because their is still more to the problem.
How many drinks did they buy?
well it has 4 possible choices. 4d + $13.00 – $6.00 = $13.20; $1.55 4d – $13.00 + $6.00 = $13.20; $6.73 4d + $13.00 – $6.00 = $13.20; $1.60 3d + $13.00 – $6.00 = $13.20; $2.07 and i dont understand what any of it means
Well they bought 4 drinks so that eliminates choice d. right? Since they used the variable d to represent the cost of the drinks.
right.
The cost of the pizza would add on to the cost of the drinks. What answer choice does that eliminate?
add on=+
is the answer #1?
Yes, but how did you get to that conclusion?
well i was looking at the last numbers and i dont think a drink would cost 6.73. so it eliminated that
i guess i used logic
What you needed to do was subtract 13.00 from both sides and + 6.00 to both sides. Then you would have 6.20=4d. divide each side by 4 then u would have 1.55=x Good job anyway though. Good luck on your test or whatever you are doing, thanks for fanning me, and please give me a medal!
i will when i get home! lol i gotta catch the bus. haha thanks! later!
Ok.
