OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is this equation true, false or open? 9p+8=10p+7 A) Open; There is a variable B)True; The expressions are the same value of the variables. C) False; The expressions are never the same. Please help!

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

try to solve it first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Well do I start off by subtracting 9p from 10p? I just don't get these types of equations that much.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Collect like terms and solve for p

OpenStudy (mertsj):

It is open because you don't know what p is therefore you cannot tell if it is true or false.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If I say, p=0, then it is false.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

If I say p = 1, then it is true.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

But as it stands, you cannot tell because it is open.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, I get it kinda. When I collect like terms, would I add them or subtract them in this equation? And why?

OpenStudy (mertsj):

You don't do anything with it except to answer the question by choosing A

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Whether it is true or false depends on the value of p which you do not know.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Maybe p is the number of days until Christmas in which case the sentence is false.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Oh alright, I get it now. Thank you very much.

OpenStudy (mertsj):

Maybe p is the age in months of a child born on September 5, 2013. Then the sentence is true.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

loool mert

OpenStudy (mertsj):

yw

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

dayummmmm

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

did she answer by herself first?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's a conceptual question. Mert explained it quite well.

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

I know, but without an effort from the student trying to figure out what those words meant first? :( we're taking away the incentive of trying to figure out first
