what does it mean for a graph to be "discrete" ?

"discrete" is usually opposed to "continuous", but not just in the sense of a few breaks or holes. A continuous function might be defined on [0,10] and a discrete function might be defined on only {0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10} - nothing in between.
