evaluate the following using the PEMDAS rules for the order of operations;9-3 1/5+- 9.2- - 2.5) /(990% /[- 1.2 +4 1/5] *- 1.5]

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

You will first have to clarify what this means: 4 1/5 Is that 4 *(1/5) or 4 + (1/5), the latter being the mixed fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 1/5 is 4 and 1 over 5

OpenStudy (tkhunny):

Unfortunately, that notation is ambiguous, so I have to ask. Placing things next to each other (juxtaposition) often means multiplication. It this case, it means addition. The important part here is that "4 1/5" is one number. 9-3 1/5+- 9.2- - 2.5) /(990% /[- 1.2 +4 1/5] *- 1.5] First, replace all the silly stuff. I think I just invented a new rule. You have PEMDAS. Today, it is FPEMDAS, where "F" stands for "Get rid of Foolish Smoke Clouds that are intended to confuse you." Replace +- with just - Replace - - with just + Replace 990% with just 9.9 Replace 3 1/5 with 3.2 Replace 4 1/5 with 4.2 Put parentheses around "-1.5" to separate the symbols Add the missing parenthesis at the beginning. Yikes! That was a really big "F" step. (9 - 3.2 - 9.2 + 2.5) /(9.9 /[- 1.2 + 4.2] * (- 1.5)] Okay, that was a lot of work just to make the whole thing look reasonable. You need to believe that nothing is broken. What say you? Is this the same expression?
