they did that because the empire was around the Mediterranean sea, which is very big. so how could the emperor rule something so huge? thus he divided the roman empire into 2 empires.

Constantinople was geographically close to Rome, the center of the Western Roman Empire. Constantine the Great did not recognize the existence of “Old Rome” and sought to re-invent it. The Christian Church and “Old Rome” leaders had moved to Constantinople.
