How did the geography of Greece lead to conflict between city-states? Answer The city-states were too close together, leading to border conflicts. They needed more land beyond Greece's small islands to support their populations. Other city-states, like Sparta, wanted the fertile land found in Athens. The large amount of coastal area left them open to many invasions by sea.
