ok

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

this is a quadratic so convert it so there s 0 on right hand side: x^2 + x - 20 = 0 now you can factor this to the form (x + a)(x - b) = 0

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

no ab must equal -20 and a + b must equal +1 (because we +x in the middle ie +1x)

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

get it?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

think of some factors of -20 theres -5 * 4 or 5 * -4 or 2 * -10 or -2 * 10 for example which one adds up to +1?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

-2 + 10 = +8 ? - nope that's no good

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

can you see the correct one?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

is it the first one -5 and 4?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

right so the factors are (x + 5)(x - 4) and this = 0

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

now when to thing are multiplied together and they = 0 then either one is 0 or the other is so x+5 = 0 or x - 4 = 0 solve these 2 equations and you have your solution set

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

* two things
