why did workers tolerate poor wages and working conditions in the late 1800s

If I remember right,.... that was a time thousands of immigrants were moving to the U.S. So because of the increasing number of U.S residents, the number of jobs available started growing smaller and smaller. People became desperate to find work and were willing to put up with poor working conditions, and low wages.
