What is the vertex for the graph of http://i.imgur.com/3PDS76d.png (4,-1) (1,-4) (-1,4) (-4,1)

anyone?

Directrix (directrix):

What value of x makes (x + 1) = 0 ?

Directrix (directrix):

@mikeshaw

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-1?

Directrix (directrix):

Yes. If you look at - (x + 1)^2, then that expression maximizes when x = -1. If you put a large number in for x, say 99, then - (x + 1)^2 becomes - (100)^2 which is seriously negative. So, x = -1 is the x-coordinate of the vertex. To get the y-coordinate, do y - 4 = - ( -1 + 1) ^2 y - 4 = -(0)^2 y = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4?

Directrix (directrix):

Yes, so (-1,4) @mikeshaw

thank you
