I know what denotation is and I know what connotation is but why do authors use denotation and connotation in writing?

OpenStudy (btaylor):

It is usually symbolic. When I describe somebody as Cheap, Frugal, Miserly, or Economical, the denotation is the same (unwilling to spend money) but the connotation, the hidden meaning behind the word, helps characterize the person better. Scrooge is Miserly, while some consumers are merely frugal.
