On a map the length of a river is 4.75 in. The actual length is 247mi. What's the scale of the map?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldnt you just divide 247 by 4.75?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yea then times that by 100, there's your percent difference

OpenStudy (anonymous):

right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

convert miles to inches or inches to miles, whichever you view the least painful, then put your 4.75/ 247, converted to match one unit, then multiply by 100, it's crucial you have one solid unit, don't divide or multiply apples and oranges that's the difference between miles and inches

Thanks you guys. I can't think straight cause I'm eating flaming hot fries and my HW is late.. So thanks :}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait I need it to be a proportion D:

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then convert the percentage that you got by multiplying by 100 to a fraction and simplify

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okaayy thank you again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem
