How to I add two fractions with different denominators?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is probably simple stuff but I've always sucked at fractions. :) I need to add -3/4 + (-1/2)

OpenStudy (ranga):

Make both the denominators the same. If you multiply the numerator and denominator of the second fraction by 2 both fractions will have the same denominator after which you can add or subtract the numerator.
