why is the hypothesis is being tested?

A hypothesis is a "hunch" with some scientific inference (or even gut feelings, but this is not good science) and is scientifically FALSIFIABLE. In other words you can never prove a hypothesis, but you can SUPPORT it or FALSIFY it with experimental evidence. If a common hypothesis has been supported by many groups independently then it is likely correct (but this can never be certain).
