a function is like a machine that takes an input, performs an operation and gives an output.
In the above example, x is the input and y is the output

you plug in what ever x you need to and solve for the y value

f(2) = 3x+14
the you pluf 2 in for x and solve, the result is the y value when x=2

in the above example with an x of 2, y would be 20 so (2, 20) would be a point on your graph

if you had to graph that function, YOU pick three x values and plot the corresponding y values and they will form a line (for now, they will plot curves later when you get x^2 in the function)
