help.. Why do cake mixes have high elevation instructions? Atmospheric pressure is less at higher elevations. Atmospheric pressure is greater at higher elevations. Atmospheric volume is less at higher elevations. Atmospheric volume is greater at higher elevations.
What happens to atmospheric pressure higher up when there is less air pushing down on things?
altitude increases??????????
right, but what happens to the air pressure does it increase or decrease as the altitude gets higher?
increase?????
No, it decreases. There are fewer molecules pushing down on things higher up so the pressure decreases.
Ever watch submarine movies? When the submarine gets deeper it has more water molecules on top of it pushing down and the submarine is in danger of being crushed. When it goes to the surface there are fewer water molecues pushing down so the pressure is less.
Same with air even though it isn't a liquid. Closer to Earth there are miles and miles of air molecules pushing down on a cake requiring more pressure to make the bubble rise the cake. Way up high like in Denver which is a mile high, there are few air molecules pushing down on the cake so you should probably use less baking powder to create bubbles to make the cake rise other wise you will get a very airy cake.
