Solve for x: |x| − 8 = −5 x = −13 and x = −3 x = 3 and x = −3 x = 3 and x = 13 No solution

pleaassss help someone:(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x= 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

because since its minus 8 you do +8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then you add 8 to the other side and it equals x=3

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well adding 8 to both sides of the equation gives |x| = 3 so there are 2 equation x = 3 and x = -3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok but don't you just take the parenthesis away?

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

what you need to know is the absolute value of a negative number is positive | -3| = 3 and | 3| = 3 that is why there are 2 solutions.

Compare and Contrast: Two equations are listed below. Solve each equation and compare the solutions. Choose the statement that is true about both solutions. Equation 1 Equation 2 |5x + 6| = 41 |2x + 13| = 28 Equation 1 has more solutions than equation 2. Equation 1 and Equation 2 have the same number of solutions. Equation 2 has more solutions than Equation 1. The number of solutions cannot be determined. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
