How did Carnegie use vertical integration to reduce competition and make his business more profitable.

He took this cost efficiency even further by purchasing coke-fields and iron-ore deposits so he could become his own supplier of those raw materials. He also purchased ships and railroads to transport the raw materials to his mills, and thus vertically integrated his entire business.
