What is the value of f(-4) f(x)=-2 if x <-3 4x if -3 \le x \le -1 x^2 if x >-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to find the value of f(-4), FIRST, let use find where -4 lands in the domain of this equation. This is a discrete equation. first part is "when x < -3 , then f(x) = -2", in this case we have x = -4. Obviously -4 < -3. condition applied. so we can conclude that f(-4) = -2.
