Ok, now I've got a real question: How can one user have two questions open in the maths section at the same time? Is one just posted under a maths sub-section, like linear algebra?

One user can post two questions at a time (opened) in a section where there are sub-sections/sub-groups available like in Maths.

Maths section has several sub-sections , for example : 

So, you can post 2 opened questions at a time in the Maths section : 

First : "Ask a question" without specifying/referring/opening the sub-section , that is just post the question as a mathematics question (including no involvement of sub-section function)

Second : "Ask a question" in a particular sub-section of Maths like you post a question of Linear Algebra by going to the Linear Algebra sub-section.

The difference between those 2 questions can be pointed out easily : 

You can see the tag given to a question if it is asked in a particular sub-section, though that question will also appear in the main section questions. (Refer to Attachment - Sub-Section.PNG , the question is posted in the Algebra Sub-Section but it is also appearing in the main Section of Mathematics , also it has a tag of "Algebra" - referring to the subtopic of the question posted by the user.)

Yes, and when it gets annoying is when they use this to post the same question multiple times.  Still, it is better than no limit and having one person post a dozen questions at once.
