1.Angelica's service club is selling flowers for a fundraiser. Each flower costs them $0.50 to purchase. They set the sale price of each flower at the purchase price plus 40%. Write and solve an equation to determine how many flowers they will need to sell to make a profit of $500. Use complete sentences to explain what each number and variable in your equation represents. Write your solution in the context of the original problem.

please help me out:(((

OpenStudy (phi):

do you know the profit is what you have left over after buying the flower and then selling the flower at a higher price ?

OpenStudy (phi):

They set the sale price of each flower at the purchase price plus 40% that means they sell the flower for 0.50 (the purchase price) plus 40% of 0.50 the profit is the 40% of 0.50 can you figure out what 40% of 0.50 is ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure im like really slow, but don't u gotta divide them

OpenStudy (phi):

can you change 40% to a decimal (or a fraction) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

move the decimal over two places?

OpenStudy (phi):

what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

.4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.4?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes 0.4 (.4 is correct, but it is easy to miss the decimal point, so people put in the zero) so 40% of 0.50 can be written 0.4 of 0.50 you should learn that the "of" in 0.4 of 0.50 means "multiply"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I gotta multiply 0.4 by 0.50?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.2

OpenStudy (phi):

yes 0.2 is the profit for each flower. the profit is $0.20 if you sold 2 flowers, the profit would be 0.20 + 0.20 if you sold 3 flowers, the profit would be 0.20 +0.20+0.20 and so on. It is easier to use multiplication: the profit for 3 flowers is 3* 0.20 what is the profit for x flowers (x is some number) ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

500 $ right?

OpenStudy (phi):

the profit is the number of flowers you sold times 0.20 if you sell x flowers, what is the rule?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

times right?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, can you write down the rule? P (for profit ) = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

profats 500 right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

profits*

OpenStudy (phi):

the profit is the number of flowers you sold times 0.20 if you the number of flowers you sell is "x", what is the profit ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

2500times0.20?

OpenStudy (phi):

you have to think like this: x is a number. (yes it looks like a letter... but think, "x is a number, x is the number of flowers sold" ) if you sell x flowers, what is the profit ?

OpenStudy (phi):

and use the idea that 1 flower, we know the profit is 1* 0.20 2 flowers, the profit would be 2*0.20 3 flowers, the profit would be 3*0.20 x flowers, the profit would be ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

you gotta sell 2500 flowers right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

to get five hundred profit?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, but the question says ** Write and solve an equation*** you have to write down the equation. can you do that ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

naw I cant:(( im like really bad cuz ive never payed attention in school and now I really regret it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like maby 0.20x-0.50?

OpenStudy (phi):

the profit you get for selling x flowers (x is a number) is Profit = 0.20x or 0.20x = Profit you want the profit to be 500, so you write 0.20 x = 500 now "solve" for x by dividing both sides by 0.20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ooooo im kinda getting it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but u juss divide 0.20 by 500 and 0.20 by0.20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so I could right my answer like this,"the number 0.20 is the profit for each flower and the variable is the amount of flowers sold which is 2500, and 500 is the amount of profit needed so the equation would look like this: 0.20x=500.and to solve for x divide 0.20 by each side?

OpenStudy (phi):

pretty close. the variable is the number of flowers sold but you can't say the variable is 2500. a variable is a letter like "x" so say " the variable x is the number of flowers sold" then at the end, you figure out that x= 2500 is the answer that gives you a profit of $500.

OpenStudy (phi):

you should also show how you know the profit is $0.20 for each flower. That is way up top.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u so much for the help you taught me something:))))

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I show how I know the profit is 0.20? @phi
