Why would the Ottoman Empire have concentrated their expansion toward the west? The western lands were important for both trade and religious power. The Greek-speaking lands were considered an ancestral home of the Ottomans. Suleyman “The Magnificent” received a revelation of this expansion in a dream. The Byzantines had provoked the expansion by spreading Christianity in Islamic lands.
