I will award a medal if you can help me with this question!

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry my computer freezes whenever I get on this website. Here is the question: 5.Using complete sentences, explain how to find the average rate of change for f(x) from x = 4 to x = 7. here are my functions

OpenStudy (amistre64):

is the slope between the points: (4,f(4)) and (7,f(7))

OpenStudy (amistre64):

use slope formula if anything ....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So wait, between the 2 points? So (4,7) would be one and then solve the slope formula with my point (12, 31) and (4,7)?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

im not too sure what your function for f(x) is defined as.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it is in the paper I attached. f(x) = 3(x – 12)2 + 31.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my point is (12, 31)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh and the 2 is supposed to be ^2

OpenStudy (amistre64):

yeah, that doc was hard to parse ... f(4) = 3(-8)^2 + 31 = 223 f(7) = 106

OpenStudy (amistre64):

so the average rate of change is the slope from: 4,223 to 7,106

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did the -8 come from?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

4 - 12 of course

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah duh sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for your help! I have trouble with the average rate of change sometimes.

OpenStudy (amistre64):

youre welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so just double checking. I plugged the coordinates you gave me into the point slope form and I got -3/117. Is this right?
