Help please if 544x= 425 eight , find the base of x

OpenStudy (ranga):

Convert the right side number from base 8 to a decimal number. Convert the left side number from base x to a decimal number. Equate them and solve for x.

yeah I am not sure how to do that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont understand base numbers that is where I am stuck

OpenStudy (ranga):

To convert 425 base 8 to decimal: You go through each digit from RIGHT to LEFT and do the following: Start with the last digit 5 and leave it as it is. Take the digit to the left of it and multiply it once with the base number: 2 x 8 Take the next digit to the left of it and multiply it twice by the base number: 4 x 8 x 8 Add up the numbers that you get above in the last three lines: 5 + (2 times 8) + (4 times 8 times 8) = ? I have to leave now but follow the same procedure for the number on the left equate the left and the right. You will have a quadratic equation. Throw away any negative value for x and keep the positive number and that will be your answer.
