PHYSICS PULLEY QUESTION please help in my book it given that by using a second pulley you only need to apply 1/3 of the weight of the body .. 1) could someone please explain the figure for me i have no clue how can that small force lift that huge weight the image is at http://tinypic.com/r/zl226o/5

are you sure it is the 1/3 rd of the weight not 1/2 of the weight?

look at the fig .. it is directly from my book ? is it wrong?

If you look at the forces applied on the weight they don't sum up to zero which means the weight will fall
