They soon became known as the Federalists and the Democratic-Republicans. Most people saw Alexander Hamilton as the leader of the Federalists, and Thomas Jefferson as the leader of the Democratic-Republicans. Why did political parties emerge in the first few years of the new republic? How did Hamilton and Jefferson differ in their visions for the nation, and how did they differ on at least two specific issues?
