Solve each inequality algebraically. x2 -4x < 5

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

subtract 5 on both sides and factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-4-5 n 5-5??

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

\[x ^{2}-4x <5 \rightarrow x ^{2}-4x-5<0 \rightarrow (x-5)(x+1)<0\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so the answer is x-5 n x+1

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

close, the answers are x<5 and x<-1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

alrighty thank ya n sorry i just need alg. 2 things broken down more then what this darn online class does :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

completing @jigglypuff314 's answer; |dw:1381681186410:dw| taking any values of x between -1 and 5,say x=1 and plugging it into the original inequality,we have; 1^2-4(1)-5 which is <0 so we have; |dw:1381681312559:dw| since we require values of x less than 0,we then have -1<x<5
