So, I'm not sure if this question has been asked before or not, but is it a good idea to create "active" colors? For instance, if someone has been logged on but hasn't been doing anything on the site for a certain amount of time their green online sign turns orange or maybe red?

Yea this has been suggested before. But in most of them, the user is able to choose their own status from a dropdown menu, like online, away, busy, show offline (in case the user doesn't want others to see (s)he's online). I don't think they'll change the site anytime soon but maybe they will :P nobody knows.
